UO Renewal Shop: Meet Janky Jewels, Love Dose, For Good Luck & Zepherina

Throughout April and May, Urban Outfitters Herald Square (1333 Broadway) will be hosting four different pop-up shops to celebrate a sampling of vintage and handmade brands, featuring Janky Jewels, Love Dose, For Good Luck and Zepherina. These brands will be popping up in UO's Urban Renewal shop, where we're committed to giving new life to used and vintage goods, as well as repuposed and remade designs. Today, Urban Renewal represents and expresses our commitment to sustainability, circularity, and reducing our impact on the environment. Read on to learn more about each of the featured brands and find out when you can shop them IRL!

Founded in 2018, Janky Jewels is a made-to-order jewelry brand run by Carol Li in New York City. "I primarily focus on integrating sculpture, object, and costume jewelry," Li tells us. "I love emphasizing physical and emotional adornment. I’ve found the most success in making pieces that are not only stand-alone art pieces, but also protective amulets, mainly inspired by my fine arts background and spirituality."

Carol loves the flexibility of being a small brand and appreciates how easy it is to evolve styles and aesthetics when she's the one in charge. "In some ways, it allows for a wider range of creative freedom that may not exist in a big brand with big expectations," says Li. "My brand gets to grow as I grow!"

"It’s exciting to be partnering with Urban Outfitters - if only my younger self could see this! I’ve always admired Urban Outfitters’ adaptation of contemporary culture and fashion - you can view it as an archive of where we are in the world, so it’s exciting to be included in the conversation of 'fashion history.'"

Love Dose is a candle and collectible home goods brand, built with sustainability and creativity at the forefront. The company began in 2019 while roommates Nicole and Amanda were attending school in New York City. Looking for a creative outlet outside of academics, Love Dose allows Nicole and Amanda to pursue their passions for collecting, candles, and sustainable goods. Love Dose uses a vegan blend of coconut and soy wax free of toxins, parabens, and phthalates and which comes from renewable resources. All of the candle containers are second-hand and can be cleaned and reused after burning.

"The best part of being the owners of a small brand is being able (and encouraged) to connect with other small NYC companies," Nicole and Amanda tell us. "Small NYC brands, especially on Instagram, are everywhere and we all know who we are, so finally reaching out on social media or meeting up in person to work together is a beautiful experience."

"Love Dose is thrilled to be partnering with Urban Outfitters because Urban is a brand our generation has grown up with, and a company that we have always searched on the web or visited in the city, so to work with Urban is a surreal experience. We are especially excited to participate in the sustainable UO Urban Renewal sector and be featured next to our other ethical small business friends, like Zig Zag Goods."

Since 2018, For Good Luck has been in the business of reviving love stories. By repurposing vintage wedding gowns and evening wear into tie dye corset tops, the brand hopes to give them another shot at love. The gowns are deconstructed and tailored into a more modern fit, and then tie-dyed, grommeted and laced with velvet ribbon. "Wedding dresses are one of the most unsustainable garments because they are designed and created only to be worn once," founder Olivia Horan tells us. "In a world plagued by unsustainability, repurposing 'single-use garments' not only offers a greener fashion option, but also allows us to perpetuate the fantasy and happiness of one of the most cherished celebrations."

"A For Good Luck top is made to celebrate life in, whether that's on a date or grocery shopping, while in the club or reading a book in the park, every day or once in a while, rain or shine. For Good Luck tops are time capsules and harbor the love and luck they were made to embody. The love they represent will hopefully bring you the best of luck!"

Designer Renea LaRiviere founded the concept in 2018 as an ode to her great-grandmother Zepherina. (Hence the name!) A combined influence of familial photographs, stories, and heirlooms constructed the character of Zepherina. This narrative is illustrated in the brand's collection of limited-edition silhouettes, crafted with premium textiles and one-of-a-kind details for a mysterious yet sophisticated look.

"The best part of owning a small brand is connecting with community and making my own rules," LaRiviere tells us.
