UO Interviews: Amanda Adam @adamandaa
Based in Los Angeles, creative and fashion photographer Amanda Adam brings her one-of-a-kind, mixed media prints to UO - YAY! Inspired by colour and the unconventional, step inside Amanda's studio space and discover where her artistic journey began, how she works and the emerging creatives we should check out.
Where did your art and design journey begin and what inspires you to create?
This wild ride began as far back as my memory lets me take it. I’ve always picked up objects and reassembled them to make something one of a kind. Cameras/ collage/ paint are my tools to create an otherworldly way of living. My inspiration stems from straying away from the “norm” and standing out.
Tell us about the creative process behind your prints… My photography is fashion-based and always centers around a garment I want to document. My prints are usually made up of candid moments I encounter during editorial campaigns. Other times, my prints are mixed-media which is the complete opposite: purposefully constructed.
How do you know when a piece is done?
My workflow is directly correlated to patience. I love to hop around projects and avoid lingering too long. Basically, when my attention span wanders to the next idea!
Sum up your artistic style in 3 words: Clowney, color, clashing.
What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever been given?
My high school art teachers never let me put down a canvas until it was fully covered. They despised white space. I found it helped me dig deeper into my artistic subconscious and become more inventive.
Which emerging artists or artworks should we check out?
Gimme Green @gimme_greens has been my go-to art shop lately. She puts so much care into her work & packaging. She’s my go-to for custom pillows, painted pants and other youthful accessories.
Faces in resin @facesinresin creates hand painted earrings/ rings / trinket dishes with bead charms and a glossy resin finish. Symbols she uses include: smiley suns and butterflies and tons of flowers.
Diana Rikasari @dianarikasari is a designer from Indonesia who practices sustainability but makes it fashion... and more! Ultra colorful, playful yet sophisticated silhouettes and extremely inventive. I’m OBSESSED.
And obviously my brand Zig Zag Goods! @zigzag.goods ~ Contemporary clownwear for the everyday freak :)!!!!!! We paint cowboy & gogo boots. We pattern mix and color-clash and create sustainable, one of a kind wearable art ❤️
