Temporary Collective: Support The Local Community

Temporary Collective @temp_collective_ has teamed up with friends and small businesses in East London to bring you an organic T-shirt range supporting local communities. Covid-19 has had a huge impact on small businesses across the UK and the collective want to support companies close to them, however possible. By using their platform for good, the team have been able to help these local businesses by gaining visibility through new markets and donating resources, and they have even covered the expense of medicine for Hackney Farm’s resident Donkey – shoutout to Clover. As a brand they’re creating a community within London, which can sometimes feel like a lonely place especially during these tough times. Their message is clear: support the locals, be part of a collective!

Meet The Businesses

1. HIGH GRADE COFFEE @highgradelondon

High Grade is a family business that was set up by Liam and soon after joined by Stevie. “We started out 4 years ago today on a bench in a courtyard with nothing but dreams and a damn fine cup o’coffee.”

“Shopping local and local community mean everything to us. Literally! Without the amalgam of passersby, the commuting workforce and local residents that make up the human mosaic of our customer base, we simply wouldn’t exist as a business. The interactions we have, the stories we share, the invaluable feedback and praise we receive, are genuinely the reason we keep doing it. Long live local.”

2. BLOODLINE GYM @bloodlinegym

A family gym with a strong sense of community and comradery, Bloodline Gym is a Muay-Thai, kickboxing, fitness & conditioning studio in the heart of Hackney.

“To me, shopping locally means supporting and promoting independent businesses and start ups in my community. Whether that's actively choosing to shop from independent businesses on my high-street or purchasing a product or service that is produced by someone in my community that shares a common interest and or passion.”

3. HACKNEY CITY FARM @hackneycityfarm_official

Hackney City Farm was set up in 1984 on a derelict lorry park by a group of local residents that wanted to bring a slice of the countryside to the heart of Hackney. We offer children and adults the opportunity to close to a range of farmyard animals and learn new skills to live a healthier, happier life with a lower environmental impact.

''The sense of coming together is what the local community means to us. The spirit of coming together to enjoy nature and learn about farming and the environment is still at the heart of Hackney City Farm. Everyone's welcome and there's always time for a cup of tea.''

4. TUBBY'S Tubby's Hackney Wick

Tubby's Kebab started 5 years ago to bring the traditional taste of Turkey to the heart of Hackney Wick. They are a family-run business who create dishes inspired by the love from their hometown and believe in the soul of Turkish cuisine.

“The local community is what has kept us going during the pandemic. Covid-19 has forced many restaurant businesses to make changes to the way they operate and we had to adapt to a new way of working. Without our local customers and their continuous support, we wouldn’t be here today.”

5. MAULE BREWING @maulebrewingco @maulecollective

A Micro Brewery creating no-nonsense, truth-telling, batch-made craft beers & ales in sunny Northampton.

“Shopping locally means spending your money on things from people locally who care about the purchased item, how it can make that small positive effect on the person buying and the impact to the local community. It’s not just a taproom for our brewery, but a flexible space and platform to highlight other local businesses – foodie pop-ups, vintage fairs, craft events – it simply brings people together in a social environment with beer.”

Meet The Designer

London-based graphic artist and illustrator Patrick Schmidt designed each graphic tee in the collection, taking inspirations from the individual companies based around their ethos and brand heritage. Patrick’s tongue-in-cheek aesthetic was perfect for these one-of-a-kind tees.

Living in South East Brockley, Patrick often frequents his local highstreet as shopping locally puts money back into the community. By getting a trim at Prestige and having the craic when you're in there or passing means you're always guaranteed a good time and a tight fade. He’ll also pop into Browns Coffee, Oliver’s and Saka Maka for some good grub.

Get involved! Here’s how you can help:
