Kika Klat X Urban Outfitters Berlin Pride 2022

Kika Klat @kika.klat is a Berlin-based illustrator whose empowering work infuses feminist and inclusive themes. Kika presents people in their most natural form using playful palettes, gritty textures and bold compositions. We invited her to transform our store window display at our Kurfürstendamm store to celebrate the LGBTQIA+ community. Read on to find out about her art, creative inspirations and her message of positivity.

We’re also excited to announce our Community Mailboxes that will be permanently installed in a selection of stores to inspire allyship, progressive conversations and share positive experiences from the LGBTQIA+ community. From how you take pride, to your coming out story or just a message of support, encourage your friends to write a note and share love all year round. Currently designed by Kika Klat, the installation also offers opportunity for artists and upcoming creatives to collaborate on mailbox artwork in the future. Stay tuned!

Get to know Kika:

How do you take pride?
I feel it’s so important to show up for what I believe in. Pride is a moment where I can do it with the community in an expressive, colourful and energetic way. I love it!

What’s your message for the community?
Freedom to love is worth fighting for. Go for it!

Tell us about your window installation… I wanted to create a piece that would empower people but also show that pride is about expressing yourself in a fun way.

What inspired your community mailbox art?
Lovely people that I see around me in my city.

Describe your art style in 3 words… bold, colourful, fun.

Why is it important to capture the body in its natural form?
Showing true body forms is extremely important for the self image development in our heads. The body is our tool and we need to let go of the idea that it should look a certain way.

What’s your favourite pride memory?
Walking in a march with my friend, having this weirdly peaceful mind despite all the sounds and colours around us, and knowing that whatever happens, I have his back and he has mine.

What or who influences your work?
Berlin! Street art here is amazing. Wherever I look there are super inspiring people.

Where do you go for creative inspiration?
Park, lake, club. I like to observe people when they interact with each other.

Who do you listen to when you illustrate?
Pop music! Taylor Swift, Lizzo and Ariana Grande. I draw with my headphones on and lipsync to the songs which always makes my studio mates laugh.

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve been given?
You are not ‘everyone else’ so just do it your way.
