What SHEET issue were you in? Issue 13: Chance

Tell us about your design… I interpreted this issue's theme of ‘Chance’ using an event which really epitomises the randomness of life: being struck by lightning. I created this drawing to emphasise that everything can change suddenly and without warning, for better or for worse. It is a reminder to 'take your chance!' and seize every opportunity that comes your way.

What/who inspires your art? I was inspired to create this drawing after looking at the bold, dynamic artwork of old comic books. I think this style really suits the humour and calamity of being struck by lightning.

What was your creative process from idea to reality? My creative process begins with brainstorming and gathering inspiration from books, art, and online media. The composition usually starts as a small thumbnail drawing, which I develop by iterating through ideas and imagery. Once I have refined an idea, I experiment with different mediums in order to realise the final artwork.

Describe your artistic style… I don't think I can accurately describe my artistic style, as it is still constantly changing and developing!

What should our next SHEET zine issue be? The next issue should be on the broad theme of ‘Progress’.

What SHEET issue were you in? Issue 12: Connection

Tell us about your design… I was playing with the idea of our lack of ‘connection’ to the earth and her own emotional (in)stability that she should have the right to express. Emojis cross all borders and languages and are the most important means of emotional communication I know, so surely they are the answer to how we should connect with the earth too!

What or who inspires your art? My friends, Birmingham and WordArt/Clipart that you make in ICT class in primary school.

What was your creative process from idea to reality? This originally stemmed from a uni project where I was exploring ‘connection’ between artificial objects in natural environments. The first thing I made was actually an animation of a giant pink glittery dildo rising out of a valley like godzilla… I had to make a 100 page book so I believe I was thinking of something that I could make a large series of, and emojis are one of the best things to ever be created and also have a very extensive collection. They fit the idea I was exploring perfectly as they’re literally something that does not exist as a physical tangible object so I figured I’d recreate them in the most basic, pure, literal way - rock. I kind of felt like how the first graphic designer caveman must have felt when he first started making collages with rocks in photoshop too…

Describe your artistic style… Direct, organic, raw, playful, eclectic, does-what-it-says-on-the-tin.

What SHEET issue were you in? Issue 12: Connection

Tell us about your design… My design celebrates staying connected and how we can all help each other grow.

What or who inspires your art? I love silly cartoons, memes, nature and take a lot of inspo from zines & printed media. Wrappers Delight by Jonny Trunk is a really good book full of old school packaging and I like to flick through that.

What was your creative process from idea to reality? I enjoy drawing things from nature, so the idea of roots & staying connected inspired the flower motif of the piece. A lot of my work begins by hand, so I started scribbling some abstract flowers and then worked into it digitally, playing with colours & adding texture. I don’t really follow any plan when designing, just messing about until I’m happy with it.

Describe your artistic style… Fun, playful & positive.

Dream celeb you’d love to see wear your tee? I’d love to see a papped Adam Sandler sporting it with some rogue outfit choice.

What SHEET issue were you in? Issue 12: Connection

Tell us about your design...
My design delves into the relationship between our conscious selves and the ethereal realm of dreams. It comments on the delicate threads that connect our waking reality with the enigmatic depths of our subconscious. Through vibrant hues and dynamic compositions, I aim to capture the surreal essence of our minds, where the boundaries between imagination and reality blur into a kaleidoscope of vivid imagery.

What or who inspires your art? I mostly find inspiration in the vintage aesthetics of colours, typography, and imagery from advertisements and magazines of the 1950s and 1960s. I also have a passion for collecting fragments of ephemera such as receipts, postcards, old letters, and stamps, each holding its own unique charm and story. These elements intertwine seamlessly in my work, elevating each other to new heights and imbuing my pieces with a sense of history, and nostalgia.

The collage community is vast and ever-evolving, and is a boundless source of inspiration. I'm continually inspired by the exploration of fresh mediums and the diverse array of creative expressions showcased by other creatives.

What was your creative process from idea to reality? My creative process is an unpredictable journey, particularly with collage; where each piece evolves organically and throws up surprising and unique compositions. I start off by finding a few key images I like, and from there I build out the piece using layers, texture and type to really bring it to life, where it then starts to naturally create its own feeling and story.

Describe your artistic style... Collage provides a canvas to breathe new life into discarded and overlooked ephemera, resurrecting them in fresh and imaginative forms. The viewer can find comfort in the nostalgic fragments in my pieces, even from eras they haven’t experienced. Working in analog pushes the spontaneity of my work and embracing imperfections, which, in my eyes, define the authenticity of my style.

Dream celeb you’d love to see wear your tee? Greentea Peng, she has such a unique style that really breathes creativity and originality within her music, fashion and persona. I’m a huge fan!

What should our next SHEET zine issue be? Harmony could be an interesting theme, or anything nature-related such as botanical.
