How To Grow Your Own Lemon Tree

Rachel O’Toole, UO Home stylist and all around DIY guru is back with a step-by-step guide to growing your own lemon plant. You know the saying, when life gives you lemons, pass the... lemon seeds? So grab your leftover lemons from Tequila Fridays and follow these simple steps to get growing!

Step 1 – Cut the lemons in half and remove the seeds. Be careful not to cut into any seeds as this may damage them. Some lemons have more seeds than others so keep looking if you don’t find many in your first lemon. You want a minimum of 5 seeds as some may not germinate.

Step 2 – Carefully peel the seeds. This accelerates germination, as the sprout doesn’t have to break through the skin.

Step 3 – Evenly space your seeds on folded kitchen paper and spray with water until wet. Leave in a warm spot out of direct sunlight.

Step 4 – Depending on the environment, your seeds could sprout roots anywhere from 5 – 15 days. When your seeds have grown roots around an inch long, they are ready to be planted.

Step 5 – Push your finger into a plant pot of soil and place the seed root down. Keep the soil moist and keep on a sunny windowsill. Spin the pot around every so often so the stem grows straight upwards, if not they will lean towards the sunlight. Now watch it grow!
Step 6 – Your seed is now a lemon tree! Keep your tree in a warm sunny spot and water once a week or as needed.
Top tip from UO Home Stylist @rachael_otoole_stylist: Use a mister between watering to keep your plant's leaves clean, hydrated and happy.
