Mia Williams, founder of Madseventies @madseventies, talks us through six feel-good vintage looks that bring her joy.
Mad Seventies Vintage Styling
1. Check-out This Look

A blazer and shirt with an amazing lapel is a Mia Williams signature look, why is this your go-to outfit?

It's a very versatile look and easy to style up or down depending on the event or environment you are in. As much as I love layering bold looks, I like to dress practical. You can't go wrong with a pair of jeans, tee, statement blazer and pair of 70s oversized sunglasses.

How do you feel wearing this?

I feel confident and chic in a fitted or an oversized men’s blazer.

What other ways you could style the blazer?

Keep it classic. Layer a 70s print tee under this statement blazer and pair with flared denim jeans and cuban heels - creating a very relaxed yet rock and roll look for either day or night.

What pop culture moment, film or musician inspired this look?

Picnic at Hanging Rock

2. Romantic Garden dress

3 words to describe this outfit?

Romantic, sophisticated and Western chic

How does this dress make you feel?

Free

Where do you intend to wear this look?

I actually wore this dress to buy milk at our local shop, it definitely turned a few heads and received some odd stares! I would wear it to an afternoon tea, lounging at home or a night out for cocktails.

3. Balloon Sleeve Delight

What was your inspiration for this look?

Mick Jagger and David Bowie. The bold colour, statement sleeves, neck scarf and bold make-up was inspired by their stage looks back in the 70s.

Tips for mixing new UO with Urban Renewal?

Keep it balanced. If you are new to mixing modern with vintage start small by incorporating a vintage accessory to your outfit such as a neck scarf. Once you have pulled off the look - it will become easier to incorporate more bold vintage pieces to your everyday outfits.

How to wear 70s and 90s trends together?

A tricky one for me - as I am more of a 70s kinda gal, but when I think about 90s I think leather. I love pairing my ultimate favourite vintage leather trousers from Urban Renewal with an oversized tee, choker chain and slip on mule. Is that 90s enough?

4. Sunset On A Yacht - Le Paris Blazer

Talk us through your WFH day... my day would start with exercise followed by a shower, then a well deserved coffee and breakfast. While having my coffee, I'll check my emails and run over the schedule for the day. Usually it will be photographing vintage stock in the studio or creating content for sustainable brands. If I’m not in the studio - I’ll focus on admin and marketing strategies for my shop, Madseventies. After a morning of work, I'll have lunch and then work until around 5pm. I'll pack up the studio, download the content and pour myself a glass of juice or a gin and tonic and reflect on the day's work. My evenings involve cooking dinner with my fiance (I don’t like cooking - so I end up washing the dishes), board games and binging a series. I have also had days where I’ve been completely out of routine - and that’s okay too! You just try your best for the next day.

What makes you feel-good in this look?

This blazer’s got summer written all over it. An elongated blazer, a slim cropped trouser, sexy heel and a red lip makes me feel good!

70s icons who would have worn this outfit? Bianca Jagger, Elton John, David Bowie, Francois Hardy, George Harrison. It was all about structure, colour and pattern in the 70s.

5. Do you even cook?

What gets you out of bed in the morning?

Coffee! And the fact that I've got another day to live.

Do you plan outfits the night before?

Never. The only time I plan my outfit weeks before, is when I go away on holiday. I make it a fun little project!

Where did you start with this look?

My top tip is to always start with your trousers. If the trousers are uncomfortable or too tight, you would probably end up feeling uncomfortable for the rest of the day, no matter what you put on top. I planned my outfit around the leather trousers. This vintage men’s tee from Urban Renewal was the perfect combo to feel chic, yet feel comfortable while working from home. I added the vegan boots as animal print brings depth to an outfit.

6. Wardrobe Crisis

What are your go-to accessories?

A pair of oversized 70s sunglasses is a MUST! A belt and a big black rimmed hat.

Clashing colour schemes which work?

Beige and orange. Pastel yellow and burgundy. Olive green and black.

Colours that bring you joy?

70s colours - Mustard, burgundy, olive green, burnt orange and sometimes red.
