Check out this video that James Franco's new endeavor, Rabbit TV, made about our friends that were part of the "Good As New" exhibition at the Ed Varie Gallery. What made this exhibition special was that it came together when Vancouver based photographer David Ziber talked about his 'dream exhibition' in an interview with the website On White Walls. Read the story of it's inception here. Congratulations guys! - Jennilee
Woo your crush and donate to a good cause at the same time. Get all the lovely details here. There's gonna be a lot of making out on the dancefloor at this Making Time, we think.
Attention all zinesters! Museum of Modern Art in NYC is having an exhibition called Print Studio (4 West 54th St) right now. My fav thing to do there is to peruse the photo books from the Reanimation Library, make photocopies, and then go back into the images, manipulating them with an acetone transfer pen. There will be demos and workshops there and everything is totally free. It's open Wednesday through Monday from 11am-4pm and runs until March 9. -Maggie Lee
Going bush with a tent and camping stove is fairly on trend these days, but the Tenderfoot artists don't give two forks about that (they prefer to eat with their hands anyway). The photography exhibition captures the spirit of eating outdoors featuring the work of Peter Sutherland and Jessica Brent, amongst others. It opens this Friday January 27 at Mr Kitly (381 Sydney Rd.). - Nadia
There are two things that are making me look forward to the opening of the upcoming group exhibition "I've Plumbed The Depths of This Whole Zone" at Shudder Gallery (433 Columbia Street) in Vancouver this Thursday. Firstly, the great group of local creatives: Jeffro Halladay, Lee Henderson, Michelle Jukic and Shay Semple. And secondly this amazing artist statement. Show runs till February 11, see you there. - Jennilee
A lot of my friends have been making some rad experimental films and I wanted the world to know. So, I curated a night of shorts called Video Syrup. There will be an array of classic and rare footage. Also, artists Tara Sinn and William Strobeck will premiering new work, huzzah! It's this Tuesday, January 24 at Spectacle Theater (124 S.3rd & Bedford) in NYC. -Maggie Lee
Last Saturday, we were excited to help The Hole NYC throw a pretty rad party to celebrate Art Contemporary Los Angeles. The party featured a performance by Kreayshawn and Young Hawaii Slim, and an art installation by New Image Art. There were also a few skate ramps, lots of dancing, and an airbrushed Alf T-shirt. Thanks to everyone involved—we had a great time! Check out more photos on Art from Behind.
Sraunus, the travelling projected photo exhibition curated by the amazing Lithuanian based photographer Paul Paper is making its Amsterdam stop at the AWA Gallery (Overtoom 301) on January 17! With a killer line up of contemporary art photographers, I wish I could see it in person! - Jennilee
Alex Da Corte's art work consists of mis-matched inanimate object, pastel colors, and the occasional inspiration from a horror flick. Catch his newest exhibition at Specifically Yours at the Joe Sheftel Gallery (24A Orchard St.) this Sunday from 6-8pm with artists Adam Henry and Rory Mulligan.
Not sure what to do with all of that holiday money? Head over to Project Urban Renewal (PUR) at Space 15 Twenty (1520 N. Cahuenga Blvd.) for their 25% off sale. You only have until January 2, so get your paws over there!
Locally—and lovingly—referred to as MOFO, MONA FOMA, is a week-long festival held in Hobart every January featuring some of the world's most avant-garde performers. Curated by Brian Ritchie (one time bassist of the Violent Femmes and now a Hobart local), this year's lineup swings from Girl Talk to PJ Harvey, to Icelandic group Amiina to local Italian disco stallion Donny Benet. The festival is the offshoot of MONA, the most fascinating, perverted, beautiful, disgusting and magnificent museum in the southern hemisphere. - Nadia
Artcrank is a series of bicycle inspired poster exhibitions that occur in cities across America. The next upcoming shows occur in Austin on February 24 and Minneapolis on April 7. Every city with a bustling art and cycling community should have one, how about Philly next? -Bob
This past Friday, we headed over to Grindcore House (1515 S. 4th) to catch Laura Marling's current solo tour (which is completely sold out, by the way) in support of her latest album, A Creature I Don't Know. The set was short but incredibly sweet, and included new songs, a few from the past, and a cover of Ryan Adam's "My Winding Wheel." Though it's been said a thousand times that 21-year-old Marling is wise beyond her years, it's not until you watch her perform that you really understand what that means. Her sweet voice combined with her honest and occasionally dark lyrics would lead you to believe she has lived multiple lives, and learned from each. We loved seeing her in such a small, intimate setting—and the vegan coffee was good, too.
We've partnered with Impossible to present a show at their NYC project space featuring the work of Foster Huntington and Claire Oring, opening this Thursday, December 15, from 6-9pm. The show runs until January 11 at The Impossible Project Space NYC, 425 Broadway, 5th Floor. Rsvp for the reception at rsvp@theimpossibleproject.com, and hope to see you there!
The highlight reels from the Vans World Cup of Surfing 2011 in Hawaii are giving us some serious sun envy. It's barely December and we already forget what warm weather feels like. We'll just have to sit here and daydream about sitting on that beach, watching these dudes catch some serious waves.
Becky Brisco is an incredibly talented Vancouver based industrial designer whose line of objects and jewelry seem to be better described as artifacts. Her thoughtful collection is carefully crafted and heavily influenced by whimsical qualities of her childhood, history, antiques, and folklore. Becky's first Holiday pop-up shop will take place at the 01 Magazine Pop Up Space (#8 East Cordova) from December 8-23. Warm drinks for all this Saturday! - Jennilee
